3 flood evacuation centres opened in Jerantut; several main routes closed

JERANTUT: A total of 128 people from 22 families have been evacuated to three temporary flood relief centres in Jerantut as several flooded main roads in the Pahang district were closed.

A spokesman from the Jerantut Social Welfare Department said Dewan Semai Bakti Felda Kota Gelanggi Satu currently housed 103 evacuees from 18 families, followed by SK Teh with 11 people from 2 families and SMK Damak with 14 people from 2 families.

Meanwhile, the road to Kuala Tembeling was closed as the Sungai Kerak Bridge was inundated, with flood waters at 0.8 meters deep this morning.

A van driver from Temerloh to Kuala Lipis was stranded in the middle of the Sungai Kerak bridge at about 4am.

Muhammad Faqihin Shaharuddin, 27, said he was unaware that the Sungai Kerak bridge had been submerged.

"When I arrived at the middle of the bridge my van became stranded because the water rose quickly.

"At that time, it was raining heavily and I did not realise that the water had reached the bridge.

"Fortunately, a lorry happened to be there to help pull my van to safety," he said.

The road to Felda Padang Piol also was closed to all vehicles due to rising water level in Sungai Putat, causing many people to be stranded in Jerantut.

Meanwhile, four other roads connecting several villages in the district were closed to all vehicles after the routes was inundated by floodwaters which had risen to 0.8 meters.

The affected roads are the Ulu Retang - Merting road, whereas the 100 metre long Sg Puai bridge was submerged by floodwaters up to 0.8 metres.

Meanwhile, Sungai Lekok to Jeransong road near the Kampung Jeransong Chinese National Type School was flooded along a 100 meter length with water rising to 0.8 metres height.

The Jalan Bukit Puas to Gintong near Balai Raya Gintong was also submerged by 0.8 metre of floodwater and is closed to all vehicles while the road from Pulau Tawar to Durian Hijau was flooded by 0.4 meter deep floodwaters near SM Pulau Tawar.
