2022 school reopening deferred by a week

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 475 educational institutions nationwide have been either turned into Temporary Evacuation Centres (PPS) or have been submerged under floodwaters as of Dec 24.

The Education Ministry said this among others saw school reopening next year deferred by a week and after taking into account its impact on various parties.

"The ministry is always concerned about the difficulties faced by all parties including school management, teachers, students and parents affected by the floods.

"This deferral involves all educational institutions under the ministry and all private schools that implement the national curriculum.

"Educational institutions under the ministry referred to schools, vocational colleges, matriculation colleges and teacher education institutes," the ministry said in a statement today.

It said schools in Category A states (Johor, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu) would reopen on Jan 9, and those in Category B on Jan 10 (Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Perlis, Penang, Sabah, Sarawak, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya).

Meanwhile, the ministry said the operation of international schools and expatriate schools will be according to their respective school calendars.

For kindergartens registered under the ministry, it said they can be reopened from Jan 2 for Group A states and Jan 3 onwards for Group B states.

"We recommend that this ruling will also be applied to all educational institutions that are not registered with the ministry.

"The Education Ministry is always committed to giving its best," the statement read.
