KUCHING: Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg today unveiled the new state cabinet lineup, which comprised three deputy chief ministers, including Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) President Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian.
Apart from Sim, the other two deputy chief ministers are Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, both from Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), retaining their positions from the previous cabinet.
Sarawak's last Chinese deputy chief minister was former SUPP president Tan Sri George Chan, who served from 1996 to 2011.
In the 12th Sarawak election, SUPP won 13 of the 18 seats it contested, and wrested back five Chinese-majority seats from DAP.
Abang Johari said the new cabinet lineup is a functional cabinet, is equipped with competent members, people-driven, transparent and with integrity, focused on delivering effective services while maintaining a solid structure system.
He made the announcement at a special press conference held at Wisma Bapa here today.
Abang Johari will also be holding positions of Minister for Finance and New Economy, Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development as well as the Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability.
Uggah has been appointed as the Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development and Second Minister for Finance and New Economy.
Awang Tengah is the Minister for International Trade and Investment and Second Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development.
Sim has been reappointed as the Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government.
Abang Johari also announced Datuk John Sikie Tayai as Minister in the Chief Minister's Department; Datuk Seri Stephen Rundi Utom as Minister for Modernisation of Agriculture and Regional Development Minister; and Datuk Julaihi Narawi as Minister for Utility and Telecommunication.
Meanwhile, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin has been reappointed as Transport Minister, and Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah as Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister.
He said Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah remained Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts and Minister for Youth, Sport and Entrepreneur Development.
Lastly, Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn was announced as the Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister.
Abang Johari said the foundation of this new Cabinet lineup was based on the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 that will develop Sarawak into a high-income economy by the year 2030.
He said the new cabinet lineup is committed to implementing all the 34 points pledged in 12th Sarawak election manifesto for the next five years, emphasising on the socio-economic development and wellbeing of its people.
"My experienced cabinet members and I will mentor and nurture participation of young Sarawakian leaders in the administration and policy formulation.
"We are renewing the lineup to bring in fresh blood and also importantly, the composition of Cabinet members is well represented throughout the state to deliver the best and most efficient level of service to the people," he added.
Abang Johari said the performance and effectiveness of the cabinet members will be evaluated and analysed by the first quarter of 2022. This approach will provide a prognosis from which necessary actions and steps will be developed for the coming years to improve effective service outcome.
Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition formed the new Sarawak government after winning 76 out of 82 seats in the recent concluded 12th Sarawak election on Dec 18.
