MCCF wants independent body to investigate MACC chief

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Community Care Foundation (MCCF) has urged the government to set up an independent body to investigate Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki.

Its chairman Datuk Seri Halim Ishak said an investigation by the independent body would safeguard the integrity of the anti-graft agency, which had now gained worldwide attention.

Halim also said no party should take advantage and exploit this issue in the interest of political parties or for self-gain.

"It is hoped that the reputation and morale of MACC staff will not fade due to this issue involving the MACC chief commissioner.

"This matter has become a key concern for the Malaysian public within and outside the country, as can be seen with the various opinions and perceptions shared by netizens on social media (over the allegation levelled against Azam)," he said in a statement today.

Halim further said he was surprised as to why the National Centre for Governance, Integrity and Anti-Corruption (GIACC) director-general had so far remained silent over this issue, which was increasingly becoming a primary public concern for both Malaysians and foreigners.

"The GIACC should have advised for the MACC chief commissioner to be temporarily relieved from duty or suspended until the investigation is completed in order to maintain the integrity of the agency, which should 'look whiter than white'.

"This is also to ensure that the National Anti-Corruption Plan launched will not be affected due to the issue," he said.

Halim added that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Advisory Board (ACAB) as the MACC's independent monitoring body should be free to voice its opinion without fear of any party.
