Mersing diving tragedy: Dad confirms son died

MERSING: The search and rescue operation for Nathen Renze Chesters, one of the divers who went missing in Pulau Tokong Sanggol, ended today after his father confirmed the 14-year-old had died.

Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Johor director First Admiral Nurul Hizam Zakaria said the operation ended at 1.30pm after Adrian Peter Chesters, who was also one of those missing, confirmed that his son had died.

Adrian was found safe earlier today with another diver, French national Alexia Alexandre Molina, 18.

"The SAR operation ended after three of the missing divers, Adrian, 46, Molina and Norwegian dive master Kristine Grodem, were found safe.

"Adrian informed us that Nathen had died because he became too weak and could not hang on. The victim is believed to have been swept away into Indonesian waters," said Nurul Hizam in a statement.

He said the Johor Baru Maritime Rescue Sub Centre have informed the Indonesian authorities to help locate the missing boy.

Earlier, Adrian and Molina were found safe by Indonesian fishermen at about 1am some 70 nautical miles from their last known location.

Grodem was found safe by a tugboat on Thursday morning about 30 nautical miles from the location where she was reported missing.

The four divers were reported missing on Wednesday afternoon when they failed to return to their boat after undergoing a diving exercise.
