KUALA LUMPUR: Only half of the total vacancies available under the Education Ministry's special one-off intake of teachers will be filled through the Contract of Service (COS) mechanism.
Senior Education Minister Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin said despite implementation of the special-one off intake initiative, there were still 4,932 vacancies available, of which 2.400 placements would be filled through COS.
"Not all the vacancies would be filled through COS. In fact, only 2,400 placements would be appointed through COS.
"We have just received the latest information from the Education Service Commission (SPP).
"Insyallah (God Willing), successful candidates to be appointed through COS will receive their offer letter from the SPP before May 31 this year," said Radzi in a brief clip that was shared on his official Facebook page today.
The remaining vacancies available under the special one-off intake, he said, involved the English, Art and Visual and other subjects thought at Chinese vernacular schools.
Radzi admitted it was difficult for the ministry to recruit suitable candidates to teach the three subjects despite implementing the special one-off intake initiatives.
The ministry in June last year announced the special one-off intake of teachers involving 18,702 Education Service Officers for grade DG41 to fill vacancies throughout the country.
As of today, said Radzi, the SPP has successfully recruited and deployed 13,770 candidates to schools that are facing shortages of teachers.
"I would like to congratulate to all successful candidates. Do your best for the future of our younger generation," he said.
