Sirim to implement certification for Musang King durian

IPOH: The Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (Sirim) will begin implementing certification for Musang King durian to ensure its quality and stabilise prices.

Perak Sirim director Mohd Adzhar Ahmad said Sirim was collaborating with the Perak Agriculture Department and Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute to develop standards for accreditation, which will be implemented by the end of the year.

"Every country has specifications to import certain products.

"If Musang King durians are certified, then there will be no need for a lot of documentation, which will reduce bureaucracy.

"Certification can also ensure prices follow the durian grade and that Musang King won't be sold at unreasonable prices," he said after officiating at the Perak Durian Growers Association annual general meeting at the Taman Meru community hall here today.

Perak Durian Growers Association chairman Nor Hisham Nayan said the association was planning several initiatives to help durian planters in the state improve the quality of their yield.

He said advanced and biodiversity courses would be organised for members in collaboration with various agencies.

"We will appoint a committee in each district to identify members who need assistance.

"The committees and I will give advice on durian cultivation."

The association has 500 members. — BERNAMA
