No special treatment for Najib, says Prisons Dept

KUALA LUMPUR: The Prisons Department has denied that former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is given special treatment at the Kajang Prison.

The department, in a post on Facebook, requested the public to stop speculating that there are special prison facilities for VIPs at its prisons.

It also denied the validity of a photograph that had gone viral, which was purported to be a cell for VIPs complete with amenities.

"Stop spreading false information," the department said.

Earlier, Facebook user D'eyo Adie uploaded a photograph of a purported prison cell that appears to be filled with amenities and claimed to be reserved for VIPs.

The Facebook user claimed that prison cells for VIPs were equipped with a television set, internet, books, air conditioning, comfortable beds and mattresses.

Yesterday, the Federal Court upheld the conviction and sentences of 12 years' imprisonment and a RM210 million fine against Najib, who was found guilty of embezzling RM42 million in funds belonging to SRC International Sdn Bhd.

Following that, Najib was taken to Kajang Prison to serve his sentence.

Social media has since been flooded with comments from netizens who sympathised with the plight of the former prime minister, as well as the possibility of him receiving special treatment in prison.
