Fisherman decorates colourful perahu kolek with Jalur Gemilang

KOTA BARU: Fisherman Zulkarnain Hashim found a unique way to show his love for Malaysia - by decorating a "perahu kolek" with Jalur Gemilang.

The 59-year-old fisherman from Pantai Sabak decorated the traditional fishing boat he made for an assemblyman in Pengkalan Chepa recently, with Malaysian flags.

"The assemblyman hired me to make the perahu kolek for him, as he wanted to place the boat near a bridge at the village's entrance.

"This week, l have seen many villagers flying the national flag and realising that Pantai Sabak has very few flags, l put up several Jalur Gemilang on the perahu kolek.

"I hope this colourful traditional boat will attract passers by," said the father of four.

As a citizen, Zulkarnain said he was proud that he could fly the nation's pride.

"I do not mind holding a simple celebration on my own as long as l can express my patriotism.

'Being a Malaysian, we should be proud of our country, which is going to celebrate its 65th independence day this Wednesday.

"Despite having various races, our country remains harmonious and peaceful," he added.
