Kelantan remains major dodol, serunding, batik producer

TUMPAT: Kelantan remains a major producer of batik, dodol and serunding.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Economic Affairs) Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said some of these iconic products were also sold to other neighbouring states, such as Terengganu.

"I am confident with this additional attraction, the number of tourists visiting the state will increase each day.

"It will also help spur the tourism industry in Kelantan and generate the economy for its people," he told reporters after visiting the Kampung Laut redevelopment project site today.

Accompanying him during the visit was East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC) chief executive officer Baidzawi Che Mat

On the project, Mustapa said it costs about RM40 million and was completed in June last year.

"There are 23 outlets with 100 workers here and the outlets sell various types of Kelantan products.

"The government would like to praise the ECERDC for handling the project well. The project, which is now being managed by the Tumpat District Council, has provided job opportunities to the locals," he added.

The Kampung Laut redevelopment project was one of the Federal Government's initiatives through ECERDC to develop the Kelantan tourism sector and create jobs and entrepreneurial opportunities.

ECERDC's other initiatives were to maintain the traditional village while improving the economic and socio-economic status of residents.

Besides the shoplots, there is also the Kampung Laut Mosque, the oldest wooden mosque in Malaysia, set to become a new tourism landmark in Kelantan.
