LONDON: The Malaysian High Commission in London has postponed the Malaysia Day celebration scheduled for Sept 13 to a later date as a mark of respect following the passing of the British monarch Queen Elizabeth II.
Malaysian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Datuk Zakri Jaafar, said the event has been rescheduled in line with the protocols issued for the mourning period throughout the country.
Zakri said the High Commission of Malaysia in London expresses its deep sorrow and condolences to the British royal family, the government and to the people of the UK over the Queen's passing.
"Her Majesty the Queen will be remembered here as well as at home for her dedication to the people of the United Kingdom as well as the citizens of the Commonwealth," he said.
Following her passing on Thursday, Buckingham Palace announced a seven-day mourning period.
However, there is no official obligation for events to be cancelled or postponed.
Downing Street has confirmed that events or sporting fixtures do not have to be cancelled during the mourning period.
Many Malaysian companies, organisations and individuals are already heading to the British capital for their events as scheduled during the month of September prior to the Queen's death.
A visit by Asean ambassadors and high commissioners in London to the Battersea Power Station, scheduled to be launched next month, has been postponed.
It is understood that many Malaysians are attending the Trilateral Global Summit 2022. Among them include Dr Billy Tang, a paraplegic farmer who will receive an award for his humanitarian efforts.
The event is expected to go ahead.
A delegation of Malaysian women entrepreneurs from Usahanita is expected to promote food and fashion in London beginning Sept 17.
The London Fashion Week, which runs from Sept 16 to 20, will also proceed although some designers have cancelled their shows as a mark of respect.
The ongoing strikes over pay and jobs have been postponed during the mourning period.
English Premier League football matches this weekend have also been postponed, including Monday's evening games, as a mark of respect for the monarch's passing.
