GE15: DAP gets extra seat in Pahang, names Young Syefura for Bentong seat

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Ketari assemblyman Young Syefura Othman has been named as DAP's candidate for the Bentong parliamentary seat in the 15th General Election.

Party secretary-general Anthony Loke, in announcing this, said DAP was taking a bold and strategic move by naming Young Syefura for the seat.

"This is also to ensure DAP's future towards multiracialism," he said at a press conference.

In the last general election, DAP won the seat through Wong Tack, an environmental activist, who gained a 2,302-vote majority against then MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

Loke added that DAP has named former Tanah Rata assemblyman Chiong Yoke Kong for the Cameron Highlands seat and former Tras assemblyman Chow Yu Hui for the Raub seat.

Loke said DAP was given an additional parliamentary seat, Lipis, for this general election.

"As such, the party has decided to name Tengku Zulpuri Shah Raja Puji as the candidate for Lipis, which is Malay-majority area and an Umno stronghold."

Tengku Zulpuri was Raub member of parliament.

Loke said Tengku Zulpuri would be the only candidate in the state to be also fielded for a state seat.

"Which state seat he will contest will be announced next week."

Loke said all DAP candidates for Pahang, except for Tengku Zulpuri, are below 40.

He said both Chiong and Chow are 39 years old, while Young Syefura is 33.

"Although they are new at the parliamentary level, they are experienced at the state level. This is an important strategy for us, fielding experienced new faces.

"Voters know them as they have good track records."

At the press conference, Loke also announced that Teresa Kok would mentor Young Syefura for her campaign in Bentong, and he would mentor Tengku Zulpuri, Chiong, and Chow.
