PUTRAJAYA: The government will slash gaming companies' special draws from 22 to eight annually starting next year.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government had agreed to cut down the frequency of the draws which had been raised by the previous government.
"We have taken such a measure as we have no intention of collecting funds from 'haram' (forbidden) sources.
"On my first day as the finance minister, we agreed to reduce the special draws from 22 to only eight beginning January.
"We have cancelled the decision made by the previous government," he said at a press conference after a special cabinet meeting here today.
Anwar also said the government needed to review whether the income from the special draws was used to finance elections.
