Anwar: Govt will prioritise galvanising country's economy

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim paid a visit to Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) today to attend a briefing on the prospect, challenges and focus on the country's economic policies at this point in time.

In a post uploaded on his Facebook account, Anwar said he went to BNM accompanied by both his deputy finance ministers, Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan and Steven Sim, along with senior officers from the Finance Ministry.

"I was informed about the country's economic situation that is returning to being strong post Covid-19 pandemic.

"However, the government must think about the current challenges to the country's economy by taking into account the risks such as the weak global economic growth, conflicts and geopolitical issues at international level that continue to worsen as well as the disruptions to the global food supply chain.

"The government will act immediately with short-term and long-term approaches to address all the problems and issues," he said.

Anwar gave his assurances that he will work hard to ensure that efforts to reform the economic structure will be embodied properly and accordingly to galvanise growth and strengthen the country's core economies.

"Attracting quality investments, shifting, moving to a low carbon economy, elevating social protection, enhancing fiscal durability will be among some of the approaches and initiatives that will be taken.

"InsyaAllah such moves and measures will be implemented with the support from and participation of BNM and all the related departments," he said.
