Search for 12 remaining Batang Kali landslide victims enters second day

BATANG KALI: After a brief stop, the search and rescue (SAR) operation to look for the remaining 12 victims of a landslide here has resumed this morning.

Police yesterday said they had halted the operations around midnight due to unfavourable weather.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Datuk Norazam Khamis, when contacted this morning, confirmed that the SAR operation continued until 4am.

Rescuers resumed the search around 7.30am today.

The death toll currently stands at 21. A total of 61 people have been rescued.

An early morning landslide struck near the Father's Organic Farm campsite at Gohtong Jaya here yesterday.

Among those involved in the SAR were K9 tracker dog units, the Emergency Medical Rescue Service from the Sentosa, Ampang, Pandan, Kota Anggerik, Kajang dan Andalas Fire and Rescue stations, as well as the Special Tactical Operation and Rescue Team.

The SAR efforts were split into three zones - Sector A Hill View, Sector B, Farm View, and Sector C Riverside, with focus now given to Sector A and Sector B.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had announced a RM10,000 aid for the next-of-kin of the deceased and RM1,000 for other victims.
