Russian couple who scaled Merdeka 118 no longer in Malaysia?

KUALA LUMPUR: The Russian couple who climbed the top of Merdeka 118 building recently is believed to have left the country.

This was based on the latest social media posting by one of the climbers, Angela Nikolau.

She posted on her Instagram story of her standing on the ledge of a building believed to be in Thailand during a New Year's eve fireworks display.

The backdrop of the video showed a city area similar to that of Bangkok and a building resembling Pullman Bangkok Hotel G at Si Lom road.

There was no indication on the whereabouts of her partner, Ivan Beerkus.

However, it is believed that both of them had left Malaysia following the media frenzy caused by their stunt.

Last week, the New Straits Times reported that the two had climbed the second-tallest building in the world after sneaking through the security at the building.

The pictures were initially uploaded to SkyscraperCity.com and later made their way to the Malaysian community subreddit on reddit.com.

They even confirmed their act two days later by posting drone shots they had taken from the top of the building.

The posting drew ire from Malaysians, commenting that the duo, famous for scaling skyscrapers across the globe, were disrespecting another country's rules by trespassing on an active construction site.

Police have confirmed to have initiated investigation on them for trespassing.

Early this morning, Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief Datuk Yahaya Othman said the police are checking the authenticity of the viral video.

Free Malaysia Today reported that they are working with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to authenticate the footage.

"At the same time, the Dang Wangi police are recording statements from the tower's management, Perbadanan Nasional Berhad (PNB).

"Based on our initial investigations, PNB's management said their strict controls throughout the tower's area would make it difficult for anyone to enter and climb the tower," he was quoted saying after 'Ops Khas Malam Ambang Tahun Baru' at Jalan Loke Yew here.
