Unemployment situation in Malaysia continues to improve with greater economic activity

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's employment situation is showing signs of improvement with 600,900 still jobless as of November last year. Just a month earlier in October, the unemployment figure stood at 602,000.

Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin attributed the welcome drop in the unemployment rate to a stronger labour market, which has benefitted from more economic activity.

The number of those employed in the wholesale and retail trade sector remained high, followed by food and beverages services, and information and communication.

Uzir said the manufacturing, construction, agriculture and mining sectors also recorded positive growth.

"In November last year, the number of employed persons remained upward, with an addition of 0.2 per cent month-on-month to 16.17 million when compared with 16.68 million in October.

"The number of unemployed people continued to decrease by 0.2 per cent," he said in a statement to local news portal Free Malaysia Today (FMT).

Uzir added that the current unemployment rate was 3.6 per cent and he expects the labour market to continue with the recovery momentum.
