KUALA LUMPUR: The government plans to impose an excise duty on nicotine-based products used in electric cigarettes and vapes, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
"Vape nicotine is still illegal but has been sold widely with an estimation over RM2 billion in sales. It would be good if it is regulated and taxable so it reduces the use of vaping.
"The government supports the Generational Endgame (GEG) effort and agrees that half of these excise duties will be reallocated to the Ministry of Health as efforts to improve the quality of health services," he said when tabling the revised 2023 Budget.
