5G rollout only through DNB, says Fahmi

KUALA LUMPUR: The development and rollout of the 5G infrastructure in Malaysia is only done through Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB).

This was confirmed by Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil, following a report by an online portal about a potential new network for the 5G rollout.

He also confirmed further discussions are being held related to DNB's rollout and no further decisions have been made yet.

"We are in process of reviewing. Discussions are being held with all related parties.

"But there's been no decision yet. Let us wait for announcements if there are any," he said in a press conference today.

He was speaking to the press during a breaking of fast event at the Sri Pantai People's Housing Projects (PPR) here today.

Also present were Touch 'n Go Sdn Bhd (Touch 'n Go) chief executive officer (CEO) Praba Sangarajoo and Touch 'n Go digital CEO Alan Ni.

An online portal, quoting sources, said telecommunications companies are aiming to create another network for a 5G rollout, in a move to bring back the dual wholesale network (DWN).

The DWN method was previously rejected by the government.

Fahmi said to date, the rollout has covered 54.7 per cent nationwide with coverage for Kuala Lumpur now at 97 per cent.

The rollout will now focus on areas outside Kuala Lumpur, he said.

"The next 25 per cent will not be in Kuala Lumpur.

"We hope to reach 80 per cent coverage by the end of 2023," he added.

Previously, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had said the government would rigorously review the rollout of the 5G network in Malaysia.

He had said the government would review the policy as the previous administration did not manage it in a transparent manner.
