Water level at Air Itam Dam increases due to cloud seeding

GEORGE TOWN: The water level at the Air Itam Dam recorded a slight increase following the second round of cloud seeding yesterday.

State Infrastructure Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said, following the cloud seeding exercise, the water level at the dam now stood at 48.6 per cent compared with 47 per cent last week.

He said the water level at the Teluk Bahang Dam now stood at 44.2 per cent compared with 44 per cent last week.

"There has been a one per cent increase in the water level at the Air Itam Dam. The cloud seeding exercise has helped.

"We will monitor the situation and discuss if there is a need for another round of cloud seeding exercise," he said today.

Yesterday, the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) and the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) conducted cloud seeding operations at the Teluk Bahang Dam and Air Itam Dam water catchment areas.

The cloud seeding operations were due to the water levels at the Air Itam and Teluk Bahang Dam needing to be more sufficient.

A similar operation was carried out last month in the area where it yielded rain.

It was reported last month that the effective capacity of the Air Itam Dam would be in a critical situation if there were no rainfall in the water catchment area of the dam in the next 40 days.

The adequate capacity of the dam then had dropped to 41 per cent and could only last till the end of June due to the prolonged dry season.
