Starlink, Tesla investment discussed in Anwar-Elon Musk meeting

KUALA LUMPUR: Starlink's participation in boosting Internet connectivity in Malaysia and the country's commitment to net-zero emissions were among matters discussed in a virtual meeting between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Elon Musk today.

Starlink is a division within SpaceX — the company headed by Musk, who is also Tesla Inc founder and chief executive officer.

Anwar attended the virtual meeting at 9.30am from the Prime Minister's Office in Putrajaya near here.

"Malaysia will continue to empower the country's commitment to net-zero emission earliest by 2050.

"Malaysia has a plan and comprehensive ecosystem as well as competitive resources to support the clean energy industry, including electric mobility.

"We also discussed the participation of SpaceX through its subsidiary, Starlink, in the satellite broadband service that will boost Internet connectivity, especially in rural areas, which only requires minimal physical infrastructure and land to support the global Internet connectivity," Anwar said in a statement issued after the meeting with Musk which lasted 25 minutes.

The meeting was also attended by Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz and Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

Anwar also welcomed Musk's readiness as well as interest shown by other companies to park their investment in Malaysia.

"I would like to also extend my congratulations and the support from the government in facilitating the opening of Tesla's headquarters, service centre as well as experience centre in Selangor this year," the statement added.
