PONTIAN: Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub was committed to defending the people's interests, said the prime minister.
Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the late domestic trade and cost of living minister was synonymous with the 'Payung Rahmah' initiatives.
"He was always seeking ways to alleviate the burden on the people," Anwar said.
"Salahuddin constantly voiced concerns about cost of living issues… a matter close to my heart and the cabinet ministers'.
"He never ceased to find ways to lighten the burden on the people," Anwar said after leading the funeral prayers at Masjid Jamek Dato Haji Noh Gadut in Serkat, near here, today.
"The nation lost a great political figure and it is hoped that the late Salahuddin's spirit and dedication, especially his compassionate and caring nature, will serve as an example."
Anwar also said Salahuddin's replacement as minister would be discussed at an appropriate time.
Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi described Salahuddin as a leader who always had the people's interest close to his heart.
"He was a leader with a people-centric approach… we are saddened by his sudden demise, and I am sure Johoreans are mourning their lost, especially in the Pulai parliamentary constituency and Simpang Jeram state constituency, where he had served.
"On behalf of Johoreans, I extend my deepest condolences to his family, and we pray that they remain strong," Onn Hafiz said.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said Salahuddin was a dedicated leader.
"The last time I met him was after the cabinet meeting last week… as usual he had files in his arms.
"Every week without fail, he would provide a report to the cabinet on the things that need to be put in place to ease the people's cost of living issues.
"Malaysia has lost a dedicated leader. He was a spirited comrade who worked tirelessly," he said.
