PASIR MAS: Kelantan will carry out three projects worth about RM951 million to improve water supply in the state.
Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud said the projects were under the state water supply development short-term plan.
He said the projects are the construction and the upgrading of three new water treatment plants in Tanjung Mas, Bukit Chupak and Chicha; the replacement of water pipes and the reduction of non-revenue water.
"The construction and the upgrading works of the three water treatment plants are expected to be completed next year, involving RM664 million funding from Pengurusan Aset Air Bhd (PAAB).
"The replacement of new pipes covering about 551km long are also funded by PAAB and will cost about RM218 million.
"The reduction of the non-revenue water programme by changing metres, repairing water tanks and setting up of the Geographic Information System (GIS) will cost about RM69 million," he said.
Mohd Nassuruddin said this at the launch of new mini water treatment plant for Meranti here today.
Also present were State Works, Infrastructure, Water and Rural Development committee chairman Datuk Dr Izani Husin and state Islamic Development, Dakwah, Information and Regional Relations committee chairman Mohd Asri Mat Daud.
Mohd Nassuruddin said the state government has also lined-up several projects as long-term plans to improve the state's water supply.
He said this includes riverside reservoirs in Joh in Machang.
"By setting up the water treatment plant with a capacity of 500 million litres per day, we hope it will channel water to all water tanks in the state including new tanks in Machang, Kota Baru, Bachok and Pasir Puteh," he added.
