Labour dept, Socso to meet MYAirline management over delayed staff salaries

KUALA LUMPUR: The Department of Labour in Peninsular Malaysia will be meeting with MYAirline Sdn Bhd (MYAirline) management today to get clarification following allegations that staff salaries were not paid on time.

Human Resource Minister V. Sivakumar today said the ministry has also instructed the labour department and the Social Security Organisation (Sosco) to take necessary action towards the sudden suspension of the low-cost carrier.

"The matter has been brought to my attention and the government is very serious about addressing these concerns.

"With this, I have instructed both the labour department and Socso to assess the situation and provide an immediate report to me.

"The labour department, meanwhile, will meet with MYAirline's representatives and the parliament, today.

Sivakumar added that Socso has also contacted the affected parties to take all necessary actions relating to the issue.

On Thursday (Oct 12), MYAirline announced the sudden suspension of its flight operations due to financial pressures.

Several reports also cited that the budget carrier is struggling financially as payments to its service providers were delayed and employees' salaries were not paid on time.

Meanwhile, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook today said the licence of the low-cost carrier will be temporarily suspended and that the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) is also expected to conduct a press conference on the issue.

At the same time, a motion relating to the issue will also be debated in the Dewan Rakyat special chambers this afternoon by Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah.
