Remembering Zubaidah: Colleague's heartfelt tribute to a respected political writer

KUALA LUMPUR: Former New Straits Times (NST) managing editor Datuk Nuraina Samad expressed her condolences and fond memories of the late political writer Zubaidah Abu Bakar, who was a close colleague.

Nuraina described Zubaidah as a dedicated and professional journalist with all the essential qualities expected of a political writer.

"Zubaidah had an extensive network of contacts and a keen sense of what was happening in the political landscape. She consistently generated fresh ideas as part of her working style," she said.

She also praised Zubaidah for her willingness to assist young reporters whenever they needed guidance or support.

Reflecting on their close working relationship, Nuraina shared: "I am very saddened by her passing. Since those days, we have worked closely and had lunch and drinks together.

"We had a small group back then and always made an effort to meet whenever we could find a spare time, as our schedules were often packed.

"Zubaidah was very senior and quite experienced. I'm sad as it has been quite a while since I last met her."

Nuraina said her modest and independent nature made her a respected figure in the field, and her resourcefulness in uncovering political stories set a high standard for fellow journalists.

Zubaidah's contributions to Malaysian journalism will be remembered as a cornerstone of excellence in political reporting.
