KUALA LUMPUR: The review of minimum wage is 80 per cent complete, said Human Resources Minister V. Sivakumar.
He said that the National Wage Consultation Technical Committee (JTPGN) had carried out public consultation and 15 engagement sessions across the country.
He said that the session is important to get collective input as the basis for setting the minimum wage rate.
"The national labor market is a dynamic ecosystem that involves changes in the employment structure.
"In line with this change, an impact study was carried out for the purpose of studying the expansion of the scope of the minimum wage application to other components of employment," he said during the winding up speech of the ministry's 2024 Supply Bill (2024 Budget) committee level debate today.
He said that the review, which is conducted every two years, also takes into account socioeconomic indicators such as Poverty Line Income (PGK) and median wage which reflects the employer's ability to pay wages, unemployment rate, labor productivity and changes in the Consumer Price Index which reflects the cost of living.
"The assessment is studied in detail in order to see the impact of the expansion optimally taking into account various factors from the aspects of employees and employers.
"The results of this study were presented and discussed in the National Wages Consultative Council (MPGN) meeting to assess the ability to implement the expansion of the minimum wage scope, which will then be taken up for consideration by the government," he added.
