ISKANDAR PUTERI: The Light Rail Transit (LRT) system proposal paper outlining its plans and details will be submitted to the federal government soon.
State Public Works, Transport and Infrastructure Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh said the state government would convene a special meeting onThursday to delve into the details of the LRT construction in Johor Baru.
"Based on the initial study conducted, Johor Baru requires three LRT lines covering Skudai, Tebrau, and Iskandar Puteri, spanning 30km," he said at the Bangunan Sultan Ismail in Kota Iskandar, here, today.
He said the LRT system was needed following the increased traffic congestion in the state's capital city due to rapid economic growth.
In addition, he predicted that once the Rapid Transit System (RTS) between Johor Baru and Singapore was fully operational, traffic congestion would worsen to the point where the LRT system in downtown Johor Baru became essential.
The RTS project is scheduled to commence operations in 2027.
"The LRT serves as an appropriate transportation method to alleviate traffic congestion, complementing the transportation system in downtown Johor Baru, especially when the RTS and the Electrified Double Track Project from Gemas to Johor Baru operate independently by 2027 and 2025, respectively," he said.
