PUTRAJAYA: In light of the rising number of Covid-19 cases recently, the government may announce additional directives especially for high-risk groups.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said the ministry may direct booster jabs for people with comorbidities and the elderly.
"The ministry may issue a directive soon for boosters for those who may be vulnerable," he said, adding that the take-up rate for the second booster was still low, at just 54 per cent.
Dr Dzulkefly said the infection rate in the country was something that needed the attention of all quarters.
He said the number of Covid-19 infections in recent weeks had already surpassed 12,000.
He added that he had informed the cabinet of this during Wednesday's meeting as this was of immediate concern, considering the approaching festive season.
"I advise everyone to wear face masks, especially when in crowded areas," he told reporters after attending his first monthly meeting with his ministry since returning to the cabinet lineup.
Also present were ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Dr Zaini Ujang and Health director-general Datuk Dr Muhammad Radzi Abu Hassan.
Yesterday, the media reported that the number of Covid-19 cases had risen from 6,796 to 12,757 in the 49th epidemiological week, in line with the global increase in infections.
However, the majority of the cases were mild, with no need for hospitalisation.
