KUALA LUMPUR: Action will be taken against telcos who charge additional fees for 5G access, says Fahmi Fadzil.
The Communications Minister said he had instructed the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to monitor and ensure that there are no additional charges for 5G usage.
He added that there should not be additional charges as the 5G infrastructure was borne by the rakyat's money.
"(In) my last conversation with the chief executive officer of CelcomDigi, for example, he informed me that just before we signed the landmark share subscription agreement (SSA) for DNB (Digital Nasional Berhad), actually they announced that they are repackaging.
"So they have announced their own new packages in which they've done away with the additional fees, that's what CelcomDigi told me.
"With regards to the rest (other telcos) I've instructed MCMC that they need to follow through and make sure that there are no more additional charges for using 5G because the entire infrastructure up until they signed the SSA was borne by the rakyat's money so there should not be additional charges," he said after launching a subscriber-based television and content distributor, OK Vision, here, today.
In August, Fahmi said the government will meet with CEOs of telcos to discuss reported additional charges levied by the companies on 5G subscriptions.
This followed news reports saying certain telcos in the country have set additional charges for their customers to gain access and continue to be subscribed to the 5G network.
