SHAH ALAM: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he is committed to the setting up of the Malaysian Gig Economy Commission (SEGiM), which is awaiting approval from the cabinet.
Zahid, who is also rural and regional development minister, said this when he was asked to comment on the protest held by e-hailing drivers and p-hailing riders against hailing services company Grab Malaysia's move to revamp the earnings framework.
He said he wanted to ensure the establishment of SEGiM was realised, to safeguard the welfare of more than 1.2 million gig workers.
"Although there are some constraints, I am sure, with the help of the prime minister, that we will realise the (setting up of the) commission; I brought (the proposal to the cabinet) a while ago and will realise it with the approval of the cabinet," he told reporters after attending the 2024 Unity Ponggal celebration.
Grab Malaysia recently announced a delivery fee and bonus framework restructuring effective Jan 16.
This, the company had said, was to ensure a steady stream of earning opportunities for drivers and delivery riders from its platform and fair compensation for every booking they complete.
The move, however, elicited concerns among e-hailing and p-hailing drivers and riders, who demanded that the company resolve several issues affecting their welfare.
