KUALA LUMPUR: The impending arrival of new Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar is set to be one of the key highlights of 2024.

The Johor ruler will become Malaysia's 17th King, replacing Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah, who will step down on Jan 30.

Members of the public have high hopes that the new King will continue advocating for the welfare of the people.

Batik merchant Maimun Yusof, 57, said Sultan Ibrahim is well-loved by his subjects and is known for his close ties with the people.

"He is known as someone who is firm and yet, cares deeply for the people. I hope he can help provide advice on addressing the issues faced by the people," she said.

Omar Qayuum Hamdan, a 22-year-old student, said the outgoing King, Al-Sultan Abdullah was loved by all and expects Sultan Ibrahim's reign to also be marked by compassion for the people.

"I firmly believe that monarchs can become a symbol of unity and stability for a country, especially political stability.

"Al-Sultan Abdullah, for example, exercised his wisdom in overseeing several changes in government.

"I am keen to see what the future holds for Sultan Ibrahim's reign," he said.

Arif Danial, 25, said he was looking forward to seeing how the Johor ruler will work with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to bring about positive changes to the country.

"Even the prime minister had previously said that he would seek advice from Sultan Ibrahim from time to time. I'm genuinely excited to see how the new Agong will work with the prime minister on various matters to help the people," he said.

Vivian Adelene Adram, 47, said she is keen to find out how Sultan Ibrahim, known for his no-nonsense approach, will touch on curbing divisive practices, particularly among politicians who exploit race and religion for personal gain.

"I am eager to see how the King speaks on these issues. These are things that, if we manage well, can help us become a better nation," said the branding and marketing specialist.

Sultan Ibrahim was elected as the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong for a five-year term, effective Jan 31.

Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah has been appointed as Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong for the same term.
