PUTRAJAYA: Sabah has emerged as the principal contributor to the country's seaweed production, registering approximately 225,048 metric tonnes valued at RM100 million in 2023, Sabah Media reported.
According to a statement from the Fisheries Department, Sabah's seaweed production accounts for about 54 per cent of the national aquaculture output, with Semporna being the primary cultivation area.
"The main species cultivated in the waters of Sabah are Kappaphycus and Eucheuma," the department said.
This announcement was made following a working visit by the Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu to Sabah to observe and tour the seaweed production sites in Semporna.
