ALOR STAR: The police and Welfare Services Department have been urged to investigate an elderly care home in Padang Serai after one of its staff allegedly abused an old man as depicted in a video.
United for the Rights of Malaysians Party (Urimai) leader David Marshel claimed that the incident took place at the home in Taman Desa Aman, Padang Serai.
"It is learnt that a police report has been lodged against the home's management and we hope the police will take action to rescue all the elderly folks and orphans at the home.
"I have also received calls from members of the public informing that many other elderly folks that have been hit and abused by the home's operator," he said in a Facebook post yesterday evening.
In the 58-second video, a woman believed to be a staff at the centre was scolding an elderly man who was wearing a yellow pair of shorts who was standing near the sliding door.
Suddenly, the woman pushed the old man to the ground, but the full incident's view was blocked by a whiteboard.
Later, a loud sound of whipping was heard and the old man was screaming in pain before the woman emerged again, with a stick in her left arm.
A man, who was recording the video of the incident from the fence, shouted at the woman in Tamil. He asked what the home's management was doing and why she was hitting the old man, while recording the video.
The woman did not respond to questions and went back to the old man, who was already lying on the floor while whining in pain.
The man was also heard reminding the woman that she would pay have to pay for what she did on the old man.
It is learnt that police have arrested two staff at the home to facilitate the investigation.
However, Kulim police chief Superintendent Mohd Azizul Mohd Khairi did not respond to the media for confirmation on the arrest.
The New Straits Times tried to contact a cell phone number registered under the home, but the call went straight to voicemail.
Checks on TikTok account showed that a video was uploaded linked to the elderly care home, featuring a man and an old man.
In the video, believed to have been uploaded last August, the man said he found the homeless old man at a temple in Kota Kenari without any identification document.
The man said the elderly man did not remember his name and his origins.
He urged those with information on the old man to contact him.
