KUALA KUBU BARU: More driving schools are expected to implement the automated driving licence testing system, known as eTesting, by the third quarter of this year, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
He said the implementation phase of eTesting was underway, following briefings provided to all driving schools.
He said any driving institute interested in introducing the system could apply to do so, emphasising that participation was voluntary.
"Currently, it is a matter of choice. Some may find it suitable while others may not.
"Therefore, once they apply, it will take some time to install the equipment and IT systems, likely within a few months," he said after visiting the Akademi PS Samy driving school.
The eTesting system launched in March this year allows candidates to undergo driving tests without the presence of Road Transport Department (RTD) officers inside a vehicle.
The candidates' performance would be assessed using sensors and cameras, with results generated in real-time, thus enhancing the integrity of the assessment process.
The implementation of the system would allow more candidates to be tested compared with the existing system, which accommodates about 150 candidates a day.
Moreover, Loke said, the number of RTD officers assigned to each institution could be reduced from six to two.
Meanwhile, Loke expressed the ministry's openness to driving schools that are interested in discussing installing the eTesting system.
He said the move towards the E-testing system was part of the Transport Ministry's long-term plan.
