'My sister once told Mak that she was afraid of dying during childbirth'

GUA MUSANG: Suhana Khairudin had previously told her mother that she feared dying during childbirth.

Fate, however, had other plans for her.

Suhana, 49, and her husband, army personnel Ridwan Effendy Yusof, 43, died today when their out-of-control car smashed into a drain along Kilometre 43 at Jalan Gua Musang-Lojing, here at 9.35am.

Suhana was six months pregnant with twins.

The couple's two other children, Akid Darwisy Ridwan Effendy, 9, and Qaisara Damia Ridwan Effendy, 15, survived the crash with light injuries.

Suhana's elder sister, Suhaily, said her sister and the family were on their way back to Tunjong, Kota Bharu after she had undergone a checkup for her pregnancy at a hospital in Ipoh, Perak.

Suhana was initially treated at a hospital in Kota Bharu before being referred to a hospital in Kuala Lumpur and later, in Ipoh.

Suhaily said she was told of the tragedy by her youngest sibling, and rushed to the Gua Musang Hospital.

"I'm still stunned by it all. But I accept this as fate," said a tearful Suhaily when met by reporters at the hospital.

Suhaily recalled her sister's conversation with their mother about her pregnancy.

"Suhana once asked Mak (their mother), what would happen if she died (while delivering her twins). Mak had assured her that Insha Allah (God willing), nothing bad would happen.

"Mak also told her that God willing, those who die in childbirth obtain 'syahid' (martyrdom / dying while fulfilling a religious purpose).

"My sister was so excited at the prospect of delivering her twins," said Suhaily.

Meanwhile, Gua Musang district police chief Superintendent Sik Choon Foo said the family were headed from Ipoh to Gua Musang when the accident occurred.

"We believe that the car they were in went out of control and crashed to the left road shoulder and rammed into a drainage block.

"The driver of the vehicle was flung out of the vehicle. Both victims died at the scene," he said.

Their bodies were brought to the Gua Musang Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for dangerous driving.

Those with information on the case are advised to contact the Gua Musang police at 09-9121222 or the case's investigating officer at 012-4027283.
