PUTRAJAYA: The government is not considering hiring Singaporean teachers, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
"It is not true; what I discussed with (Singapore Prime Minister) Lawrence Wong is a possible scheme where teachers from Singapore assist and volunteer to go to rural areas in Sabah and Sarawak to teach English.
"Listen first, instead of harping on social media with the wrong facts.
"(You) can ask first (without making assumptions)," he said in his speech at the Public Service Department peer guides' Madani Aspirations gathering at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre today.
Anwar, who is also finance minister, said such discussions were aimed at forging a better relationship with neighbouring countries, including Singapore.
He said other matters, including the economic zone in Johor, were also discussed during Wong's inaugural visit to Malaysia.
It was reported that Johor and Singapore are already working on a joint education project with a new curriculum which involves the exchange of programmes and teacher training.
