Orang Asli girl swept away by river found drowned

GUA MUSANG: The 7-year-old Orang Asli girl who went missing after bathing in Sungai Nenggiri near Kampung Kuala Betis here yesterday, was found drowned today.

District police chief Superintendent Sik Choon Foo said the body of Syamely Nur Aleh Qarni Sham was discovered by the search-and-rescue (SAR) team at noon.

"With the help of several villagers, the SAR team discovered the body about 1.8km from the place where she was reported missing.

"The body was later sent to the district hospital for a post-mortem," he said.

Syamley Nur Aleh was bathing with her three cousins in the river before being swept away by the current about 4pm yesterday.

The victim from Selangor had returned to the village a few days ago and was bathing in the river behind their house.

According to the district's fire and rescue spokesman, two of her cousins were rescued by villagers.

The spokesman said the victim, however, was swept away and could not be saved.

He added that firemen were alerted to the incident at 4.25pm and 11 personnel were dispatched to the scene.
