Opposition files motion to cancel govt's sale of MAHB shares to GIP

PUTRAJAYA: An opposition member of parliament has submitted a motion requesting the government to retract the decision to sell part of Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) shares to Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP).

The motion was submitted today by Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal (PN-Machang) under Standing Orders 18(1) & 18(2) as an urgent motion.

Wan Ahmad Fayhsal stated that a similar motion had been sent earlier in June under Standing Orders 27(1) and 27(3) as a private member's motion to be included in the Order of Business (non-government affairs) for consideration to be debated.

"Perikatan Nasional (PN) takes a firm stance to ensure this sale decision is cancelled.

"This is not only in the interest of national sovereignty but also serves as a clear message reflecting the stance of the majority of Malaysians who reject the inhumane actions of the Zionist regime against the Palestinian people," he said via a Facebook post.

On May 15, Gateway Development Alliance (GDA) and its shareholders announced a pre-conditional voluntary offer to take over all shares in MAHB not yet owned by the consortium, at an offer price of RM11 per share, equivalent to RM18.4 billion.

The consortium is led by two Malaysian government-linked investment companies: Khazanah Nasional Bhd, through its wholly-owned subsidiary UEM Group Bhd, and the Employees Provident Fund (EPF).
