Sungai Bakap by-election brings 'rezeki' to Kak Na

NIBONG TEBAL: The Sungai Bakap by-election has proven to be boon for Kak Na's stall in Kampung Sungai Buaya.

Diners can enjoy a bowl of laksa, bihun sup, koay teow sup, mi sup and ais kacang for a mere RM2.

Kak Na or Mazlina Md Hashim, 40, said she has been enjoying a steady stream of visitors from campaign workers since Saturday.

"Since the start of campaigning, a large number of visitors, especially out-of-towners, have been coming in.

"Alhamdullilah, there is rezeki from this by-election," she said when met at her stall.

Kak Na took over the business from her parents when she was 22.

Her parents started the business in 1977 with just a makeshift stall. At that time, some of the items on the menu were sold for just a few sen.

When Kak Na took over, the same items were priced at RM1. The most expensive bowl was sold for RM3.

More than 10 years later, the price of the cheapest bowl of noodles or ais kacang is now RM2.

"There is still some profit to be made. Even then, I am content.

"I am not here to do business for just a day or two. I am here to stay.

"I am happy to see customers enjoying my food. It is nice to see families eating together.

"More importantly, I want to allow those with less means a chance to enjoy my food," she added.

Kak Na said she prepared her food according to how much a customer could afford .

"If they want a bigger portion and with more ingredients, they can opt for the RM3 and RM5 bowl.

Kak Na's stall now boasts 15 tables.

She prepares the food herself with recipes handed by her mother.

Besides being occasionally assisted by her ageing parents, she also employs local residents at her stall.

Her stall is open daily from 12.30pm to 7.30pm except on Tuesdays.

Kak Na said some of her customers asked why she had not increased her prices.

"I have no immediate plans to do so," she stressed.

Kak Na prepares the dishes wholeheartedly.

"When doing business, we should not do things 'cincai'," she said.
