Lower electricity tariff for commercial users intended to reduce prices of goods: PM

SEBERANG PRAI: The government's move to reduce electricity tariff for industrial and commercial users is intended to lead to a drop in prices of consumer goods.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said they are monitoring the situation.

"We want to see if the reduction in electricity tariff for industrial and commercial users will lead to a drop in goods.

"That is our intention," he told newsmen here today.

He was met after chairing the Penang Bumiputera Development Council meeting at The Light Hotel here.

Earlier today, the government announced a reduction in electricity tariff for industrial and commercial users.

The government has also decided to maintain the electricity tariff for domestic users in Peninsular Malaysia until the end of the year.

Anwar said government policies, particularly the electric subsidy rationalisation implemented last year, was not meant to affect the majority of people.

He said despite the move being criticised, it saved the government between RM4.5 billion and RM4.6 billion.

"This means the rich and the foreigners continue to pay full. Why should we be thinking of the foreigners and smugglers?

"When we are successful in our implementation, then we are able to bring down the cost," he added.
