KUCHING: Former Sarawak Registry of Societies (RoS) director Datuk Georgina Apphia Ngau has been appointed as the new director of the state's Unit for Other Religions (Unifor).
She takes over from Richard Lon, who was transferred to helm the same position at the Immigration and Labour Management Unit in the Premier's Office at Wisma Bapa Malaysia in Petrajaya here.
Ngau earlier today paid a courtesy call on the minister in charge of Unifor, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, at his office.
She later said that apart from continuing to strengthen the strong ties now enjoyed by all religious groups in the state, the deputy premier had emphasised to her the importance of monitoring how funds allocated to various non-Muslim houses of worship were used.
She said she had to ensure that the funds provided by Unifor for upgrading and constructing new houses of worship for non-Muslims were utilised as intended, and that whatever work undertaken could be completed on time.
She also said a new addition to her job scope was vetting the cost of projects proposed by the management of the houses of worship to avoid overspending.
Ngau's appointment starts from the beginning of the month. Apart from the RoS, she had served in many senior positions in the federal civil service and was a member of the National Anti-Drug Agency.
