Assistant medical officer killed in Tapah ambulance crash

TAPAH: An assistant medical officer was killed after an ambulance she was in was involved in an accident with a trailer at KM330.8 of the North-South Expressway (northbound) here early today (July 8).

The 30-year-old victim died on the spot after her body was pinned to her seat during the 4.30am incident.

Meanwhile, the 41-year-old ambulance driver sustained minor injuries.

Tapah district police chief Superintendent Mohd Naim Asnawi said the accident involved a private ambulance and a trailer.

He said during the incident, the ambulance was on its way back from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Hospital in Cheras to Ipoh after sending a patient.

"The trailer was on its way to Bukit Mertajam in Penang from Klang.

"Preliminary investigation showed that the incident is believed to have happened after the ambulance hit the rear side of the trailer, which was driven by a 32-year-old man.

"As a result of the impact, the female victim, who was seated in the back seat was pinned to her seat and pronounced dead at the scene," he said in a statement.

Mohd Naim said the ambulance driver sustained minor injuries while the trailer driver escaped unharmed.

"The body of the assistant medical officer was taken to the Tapah Hospital for post-mortem, while the injured was also rushed to the same hospital for treatment," he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless or dangerous driving causing death.

He also urged those who witnessed the incident to come forward and contact the investigating officer, Inspector Mohd Faizan Ahmad, at 013-2087919 to assist in the investigation.
