KUALA LUMPUR: The police have already summoned witnesses to finalise the investigation papers on the late Teoh Beng Hock's 2009 death, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
He said the investigation papers had been handed over to the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) for comments and feedback.
In a Parliamentary written reply to Lim Lip Eng (Pakatan Harapan-Kepong), Saifuddin said the police reopened investigation papers into the death under Section 342 of the Penal Code for wrongful confinement, following the cabinet decision in 2018.
"That investigation paper has been returned by the AGC to the investigating officer on Jan 6, 2023."
Lim had asked Saifuddin to explain the status of the reinvestigation of Teoh and fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim's deaths.
Teoh's body was discovered on the fifth-floor landing of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam on July 16, 2009.
He was being questioned overnight by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission officers on the 14th floor of the building.
At the time, Teoh was the political aide to the then-Selangor executive councillor Ean Yong.
On Adib's case, Saifuddin said a special committee was established on Oct 9, 2021, based on a cabinet decision.
This was to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation process, and was chaired by the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), and included the home minister, the housing and local government minister, and the AG.
"The Special Committee began the investigation process on Dec 21, 2021, and submitted the final report to the Government and the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister's Department," he said.
In November 2018, Adib was injured at a scene of a riot which happened at the Sri Maha Mariamman temple in USJ 25, Subang.
He was part of the Fire and Rescue Department team who responded to a distress call to the scene, and was attacked by a group of rioters.
Adib succumbed to his injuries and died at the National Heart Institute a month later.
