PUTRAJAYA: Social media platform X is the least compliant with Malaysian laws, said Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
At a press conference today, he said X only scored a compliance rate of 25 per cent in the first half of the year.
He said most of the problems with X was with cyberbullying and pornographic content.
"It is followed by Telegram, which recorded 65 per cent, and TikTok at 76 per cent.
"Meta platforms are the most compliant with our laws, with Facebook at 85 per cent, Instagram at 88 per cent and WhatsApp at 79 per cent."
Fahmi said the three issues that affected Malaysians the most on social media were scams, cyberbullying and sexual crimes, particularly against children.
He said Malaysians mostly fall victim to online scams on Facebook, while cyberbullying and the use of fake accounts happen the most frequently on TikTok.
"Losses from scams, including non-existent investment schemes on Facebook, reached RM8 million to RM132 million in the first half of the year.
"As for Telegram, issues include scams, online gambling and the leaking of personal and sensitive information.
"There are also issues with the piracy of films and videos owned by other parties and Telegram did not take action."
He said the cabinet agreed at its meeting today that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Attorney-General's Chambers and police would review the issues and take action.
Fahmi did not elaborate on what action would be taken.
"This will improve coordination in investigation and prosecution, including for online crime."
He said he would meet representatives from social media platforms in Singapore on Sunday to address the issue.
"MCMC has issued a letter to them for their feedback on the issues raised. They have agreed to meet and discuss. I hope they will provide commitment."
