China energy firms ready to invest RM10b to turn Sarawak into green energy hub

KUCHING: Two China energy companies, Shanghai Electric and China Three Gorges International Ltd - which have been doing business in Sarawak for nearly a decade - have declared their readiness to invest RM10 billion into the state's green energy plan.

Shanghai Electric Malaysia director Zhang Xiaohui told the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) that both companies believed the state will become a green energy hub.

"We believe (in the industrial vision) of the premier and have faith he could turn Sarawak into a green energy hub.

"We (therefore) would like to extend our support," Zhang said after paying a courtesy call to Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at his office in Wima Bapa Malaysia.

Speaking on behalf of Three Gorges, he said the two companies' experience and success in working with companies in Sarawak had given them the confidence to invest more.

Three Gorges played a significant role as the main contractor for the Murum hydroelectric dam.

They were responsible for providing engineering procurement construction (EPC) services for the project, which included building and overseeing the construction of the dam.

The Murum dam, which commenced construction in 2008 and became operational in stages from 2014 to 2015, is a key hydroelectric power project in the state.
