KUALA LUMPUR: The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) has raised concerns over the potential environmental impact of the sinking of the iconic Pulau Kapas ferry in Penang yesterday.
IEM president Professor Dr Jeffrey Chiang Choong Luin said although the incident did not cause any fatalities or injuries, the risk of water pollution due to oil spillage required urgent attention and action.
"The sinking of Pulau Kapas is alarming. The potential for water pollution is a serious concern that must be addressed immediately."
On Wednesday morning, the ferry capsized at the Pangkalan Sultan Abdul Halim terminal in Butterworth.
The ferry is believed to have sunk after a mooring rope snapped under the pressure of strong winds.
"While establishing the cause of the sinking, as well as pending further investigation by the Penang Port Commission, IEM stands ready to assist in investigation works.
"IEM proposes that more stringent checks and safety measures be carried out by qualified professional engineers and registered technicians to prevent the recurrence of such incidents with the other ferries," Chiang said.
