KUALA LUMPUR: In commemorating Hari Pahlawan, Malaysian youths expressed heartfelt gratitude for the sacrifices made by soldiers in maintaining the peace and harmony of Malaysia.

Youth met by the New Straits Times said they agree it is important to acknowledge the efforts of the soldiers and heroes who have fought for the country's safety and independence.

Student Nur Zahirah Zahid, 22, said as someone whose family members are soldiers and warriors, she is always grateful for their service in serving the nation.

"Stories passed down by my father and grandfather often pique my interest in history and the days they fought for Malaysia's independence.

"He once lost a finger during the war but wasn't afraid of that; he feared losing to the communists more than losing his life. I admire his courage and respect him greatly for his bravery, which stands out to me," she said.

She added that during Hari Pahlawan, she often visited the Army Museum located in Port Dickson with her father to honour the sacrifices made by the heroes.

Suhaimi Tuah, 28, an engineer, also appreciates all soldiers who have contributed to the country's defense.

With personal connections to the military, including family members who have served, Suhaimi emphasised the importance of recognising and understanding the historical sacrifices made for Malaysia's independence and unity.

"My grandfather was a soldier and a lieutenant, while my uncles are also in the military. One of them was stationed in Melaka recently.

"The legacy runs in the family and I think it is crucial to express gratitude for their sacrifices, which ensured our comfort and safety.

"They chose a difficult path to ensure our comfort and safety, even though they had other, easier options," said Suhaimi, adding that the younger generation should appreciate our soldiers more.

Azrul Haikal Zambri, 23, a student, said he showed his appreciation towards the soldiers and frontliners by watching historical movies to help him connect and appreciate their sacrifices.

"I often watch historical movies that feature our nation's soldiers, especially Lieutenant Adnan, as he is a figure who inspired me during my service in the military.

"We should have a strong sense of patriotism, similar to the struggle of Lieutenant Adnan and the Malay soldiers who were willing to fight to the death to prevent the country from being colonised," he said.

Meanwhile, Vikkasni, 22, a student, said she feels immense pride in witnessing the parade honouring brave soldiers and their sacrifices and dedication to the nation's safety.

"My appreciation towards our heroes is always celebrated when I take the opportunity to visit the parade that takes place at Dataran Merdeka on Malaysia's National Day," she said.
