Costly to develop own social media app, says Fahmi

PUTRAJAYA: Developing a social media application specifically for Malaysians is costly and not currently a priority for the government, says Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

He said the government was more focused on pressing issues such as dilapidated schools and clinics.

"However, if any private companies in Malaysia wish to develop these platforms, we won't stop them. They can contact Mosti (Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry) or MDEC (Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation) for assistance," he said after attending the ministry's monthly assembly today.

It was reported that the government was considering a proposal to develop a social media application exclusively for Malaysians.

Fahmi said some social media application providers were profiting off Malaysians but failed to ensure user safety.
