Refurbished Johor Zoo to reopen on National Day

JOHOR BARU: After three years of closure, Johor Zoo is set to reopen on National Day.

Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the zoo would be inaugurated by Regent of Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim on Aug 28, ahead of its public opening.

"The zoo's revitalisation brings with it a fresh experience, complete with upgraded facilities and a new pricing structure," Onn Hafiz said during a visit to the zoo yesterday.

Located in Jalan Gertak Merah, here, the zoo will have entrance tickets priced at RM10 for adults and RM5 for children. Foreign visitors will be charged RM30 per entry.

However, a 50 per cent discount on tickets for locals will be applied in September. Malaysians under the age of 12 will enjoy a free entrance fee for a month.

Johor Zoo was closed in 2020 due to the Covid 19 pandemic and underwent a transformation.

It now houses more than 275 animals, including tigers, elephants, camels, monkeys, tapir, birds and a large reptile exhibit.

Onn Hafiz said he was satisfied with the upgrading and transformation work.

He added that with its rich history and new features, Johor Zoo is expected to draw large crowds, including foreigners.

The 96-year-old zoo, located on 4.73ha of land, was opened in 1928 by the late Sultan Sir Ibrahim Sultan Abu Bakar.

Johor Zoo, once known as Kebun Binatang, is the country's oldest zoo.
