Trust with India opens doors for major Malaysia-India collaboration, says Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said any potential programmes between Malaysia and India are potential to take place due to the trust and affection shared by the two countries.

He said the trust and affection between the two countries must be translated into concrete programmes, particularly in areas such as trade deficits, import, investment, and new technology that were discussed between both governments during his visit to New Delhi this week.

In an exclusive interview with India Today Global, he said that the good relationship between him and his counterpart Narendra Modi facilitated the discussion on issues of common interest between the two countries such as energy transition, semiconductors, and digital transformation.

"Give us a three-month time frame, (as) the various committees at the Malaysia level to come back to us to ensure the serious issues must be implemented, whether yes or no or postpone (but) in three months we want to have the answer.

"(This is a) major breakthrough in international relations. This could happen because there is trust and affection (between India and Malaysia)," Anwar said.

Earlier today, the Investment, Trade, and Industry Ministry said it has secured RM8 billion of potential exports and RM4.5 billion of potential investment during the Prime Minister's official visit to India from Aug 19 to 21.

According to the ministry, the potential exports are in sectors such as palm oil and palm oil-based products, chemicals and chemical products, oil and gas, and aircraft spare parts.

A commitment of RM4.5 billion in investment was secured from Indian companies in sectors such as information technology, logistics, chemical, and pharmaceutical sectors.
